Historic Halifax - Set on the rolling Roanoke River, the historic town of Halifax lets you step back in time to the days of the American Revolution, when this was a thriving riverside settlement. Take a walking tour through this remarkable site, viewing restored and furnished buildings from the 1700s and 1800s. See the jail, law office, tavern, and the home of a wealthy landowner, plus a merchant's home that dates back to 1760. Note that the jail and clerk's office are both made from fire-proof brick! You can tour the cemetery, the old-fashioned market square, and learn about the archaeological studies being performed on the site. If you visit in mid-April, join in the festivities of Halifax Day, an event that features hands-on activities, tours, and living history demonstrations.
Lake Gaston - This 34-mile-long lake spans two states, Virginia and North Carolina, offering more than 350 miles of shoreline. Visitors can enjoy water sports like boating, inner-tubing, wake boarding, jet skiing, and water skiing on the lake's glassy surface. The well-stocked lake hosts several fishing tournaments for striped bass, rock fish, crappie, sunfish, catfish, and large mouth bass. But aside from the pleasures of the lake itself, the surrounding area also boasts a number of attractions from fabulous restaurants to shopping centers and cultural activities. You can bring your own water craft and make use of the public boat ramps and marinas that are located around Lake Gaston, then enjoy a North Carolina afternoon of water sports and boating on this glorious lake.
